considering Holland as a place to vacation/own a vacation home. how many miles is it from the downtown area (8th) to the beaches? Is the bridge that goes over lake macatawa crowded/slow during the summer? is it better to live on one side (north or south) or the other? We have dogs and consider them to be just as important in the decision-making process. Where is it most dog friendly? Beaches they can swim off leash in? parks?

A: Thank you for your interest in vacationing in Holland!  With the many activities in downtown Holland, our numerous parks, and the beautiful lakeshore, Holland is certainly a great vacation and relocation destination.  Downtown Holland is approximately 6 miles from Holland State Park Beach and crossing the bridge over Lake Macatawa is never a problem.

If you are looking for walkable mixed use neighborhoods, where one doesn’t have to be tied to their automobile to get out and enjoy the city, then staying on the southside is a must.  You can check out descriptions of our different city neighborhoods here (http://www.enjoyhollandmichigan.com/neighborhoods/).

Downtown Holland (http://www.downtownholland.com/hotels/) has several options for lodging, including the CityFlatsHotel, Haworth Inn and Teerman Lofts all located smack dab in the middle of downtown Holland and close to everything.  Of course there are other hotels throughout the Holland area that offer quick and easy access to all that Holland has to offer. (http://www.holland.org/visitors/where-to-stay/).

The City of Holland is dog friendly, as you’ll see many people walking their dogs throughout our neighborhoods.  And while the City currently does not have a dog park where dogs can roam free, there are two dog parks within 5 miles of the City on the north side and a dog beach about 12 miles north of the city.
